A View From a Bridge (Arthur Miller,1955)  studied by A level and GCSE English students is a play that deals with the issues of loyalty and not yielding to an unjust external force or in Miller's own case, that of McCarthy's notorious trials of so called UN-American activities.  It is a classic and full of well fleshed out issues that still resonate today.  From West London English Tutor, English and Media Tutor, Harrow, London

Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen (1813), is a novel studied from GCSE level.  It is about issues of class, and of marriage and courtship.  Pride and Prejudice was considered the 'darling child' of the creative mind of Jane Austen and the themes, characters and concepts explored in the novel have had an indelible mark on contemporary and modern society over the past 200 years.  From West London English Tutor, English and MediaTutor, Harrow, London www.westlondon-englishtutor.com

I watched a BBC Radio show Tutor verses Teacher and found it raised some interesting points.  The main point I gained was that teaching is different from tutoring in so far as a teacher is the leader of a class of about thirty, follows the national curriculum and plans detailed lessons with provisions for discipline, differentiation and the regular marking and assessing that goes along with it.  Both camps claim legitimacy, but it is my opinion that teaching in the traditional sense will radically change in the next few years and that this will include a part or complete dismantling of the current education system; and in light of how concentrated and effective private teaching is, I would say that this can only be a great thing for all humanity and related creatures...

English and Media A Level and GCSE - in Harrow, London

English and at GCSE or A Level is one subject that has very flimsy boarders and spills over to any writing and language rich subject such as Geography, Media, RE, Philosophy...  Even science needs a competent grasp of English, or more correctly, communications and the ability to write, read, comprehend, analyse, speak, argue, think effectively, listen and also understanding visual literacy.  It is a big subject and perhaps it should be broken down into more simple components.  From West London English and Media teacher, English and Media tutor in Harrow, London www.westlondon-englishtutor.com

GCSE and A Level English and Media Tutor in Harrow, London - mastering reading

Reading was promoted when I was at school called DEAR, an initialisation for 'drop everything and read'.  I always thought that it was pointless and I never read during this time.  When I became interested in philosophy, I talked very much, then watched documentaries, then when I exhausted those avenues, I began to read up to thirty books a year.  For me, it was after the teachers got out of my way and life and I had the freedom to grow and consequently learn that sparked my quest of discovery and reading...   From West London English and Media Teacher, Media and English Tutor in Harrow, London www.westlondon-englishtutor.com

Being a better English student means writing, reading, talking, listening.

English lessons are designed to be interesting but the real way we all get better at English is to write, read, listen, speak and to aim to get better at writing, reading, listening and speaking.  There are many students who feel there is some mysterious way to becoming a better higher achieving student through unrealistic means.  There is no short cut and English students have to be disciplined around practicing English with a sense of pleasure.  From West London English and Media Teacher, English and Media teacher in Harrow, London  www.westlondon-englishtutor.com

English Lessons for GCSE and A Level students in Harrow, London

How does a GCSE or A Level student write an essay that is worthy of an A or B?  Most students need to be interested in the topic they are writing about and to build from there.  I teach a student needs to gather information, learn it, and start with the essay question.  Then build an introduction which is your essay plan.  From there students gather quotes and develop there argument.  This link is very useful and helpful.  From West London English and Media Tutor, English and Media Tutor in Harrow, London

As a private teacher, I find that school can not even come close to the effectiveness I can achieve with my students.  I am not just a tutor, I am more like a teacher running his own school.  There is no interference from anyone.  School is a sluggish system that is wildly ineffective and redundant.  I have found this book to be quite interesting.  It is written by educators who know that conventional schooling needs reformation.  Though I say tear down all schools, and let's create a system where students, teachers and parents are more happy and not burdened by a headless despotic education system and a relic from the industrial revolution where the question of 'what to do with the children' was in need of addressing.    http://paltip.com/westlondonenglish/!50pu  From West London English and Media Teacher, English and Media teacher in Harrow, London
